Gardens in India

All of India’s ancient gardens (ie pre-1,000 CE Hindu and Buddhist gardens) have been lost, yet India has a large number of historic gardens made under the influence of Islam. This includes the Mughal gardens of North India, of which the Taj Mahal Garden and the Shalimar Bagh Garden in Kashmir are perhaps the most famous. Visiting the gardens in North India is relatively easy but visiting gardens in other parts of India is likely to involve some bumpy road travel. Because of the dry climate in the Northwest, Indian gardens depend on irrigation.

In addition to these Indian Garden Finder entries, please see the Garden Tours pages for information on tours, self-guided visits tailor-made tours and gardens open to the public in India.
